Niger State College of Education, Minna
...Second Best is not Good Enough.

Grade Point Average (GPA)

There is considerable variation in the grading system in the Nigerian Universities…this has reflected on the College of Education. Most College of Education tend to use a combination of letter and figure grades. The letter grade from A to F, while the figure grades vary from 0-7, but a number of College use 0-4 figure grades.

    1. The College in line with the National Commission of College of Education (NCCE), has adopted the grading system involving the use of both letter (A-F)         and figures (0-5). This is because it is more consistent with the degree classification in use in Nigeria. Thus, the grading system for the NCE is similar to what is in use in the Universities.

    2. The percentage score, letter grade point average (GPA). Cumulative grade point average (CGPA) and the status of pass are: A minimum pass mark at 40% (equivalent to grade point of 1) and also a minimum CGPA of 1.00 is required for graduation.

DEFINITIONS OF GRADE POINT, GRADE POINT AVERAGE AND CUMMULATIVE GRADE POINT AVERAGE

  • Grade point: The grade point derives from the actual percentage raw score for a given course the raw score is converted into letter grade and a grade point (see table 1).

  • Grade point Average (GPA): the grade point average is obtained by multiplying the point attained in each course by the number of credit units assigned to that course, and then summing these up and dividing by the total number of credit units taken for the semester.

  • Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA): This is the up-to date mean of the Grade Point earned by the student in a program of study. It is an indication of a student’s overall performance at any point in the training program. The CGPA is given by the sum of Total Grade Points multiplied by their respective Credit units per semester and divided by Total Credit units for all courses registered by the student.
